My 5 year old daughter has just discovered the classic movie Swallows and Amazons and is happy to watch it over and over on DVD. So it felt like serendipity when I noticed the Victorian boathouse that inspired Arthur Ransome’s books is now up for sale.

If childhood days spent dinghy sailing on lakes are responsible for your current love of boats then perhaps one of these slightly larger boats (now reduced in price) could reignite your sense of childhood adventure. Pick one to suit your budget and then head off for pirate voyages and campfire cooking.

Sadler 29 now £17,995

The Sadler 29 (pictured) has an excellent reputation for seaworthiness and ease of handling making them very popular family cruisers. This one had the engine and gearbox completely overhauled in 2011. At the same time a new stern gland was fitted. Since going back in the water in March 2012 the engine has completed less than 40 hours.

Southerly 115 now £64,950

This Southerly 115 comes with a very good inventory; there have been numerous upgrades in the last 5 or 6 years including the sails, standing rigging and new upholstery.

As with all Southerly’s’ they are spacious and comfortable; the saloon is light and airy and the aft cabin is very comfortable with lots of storage and an en-suite. The Navigation Station faces forward and with the autopilot controller can be used to helm the boat, in suitable conditions, from the comfort of the cabin. They therefore have some of the qualities of a motor sailor; but add in great sailing performance. The lift keel housing is in no way intrusive and the shallow draft allows exploration and anchoring in remote locations inaccessible to conventional yachts.

This boat is very nice example of this sought after yacht.

Sea Ray 390 now £195,000

Not so much Swallows and Amazons, because the Sea Ray 390 exudes quality from the stylish and innovative design to the quality of everything on board. The fully covered cockpit and helm are ideally suited to our changeable climate. The plush interior includes an owner’s cabin aft with en-suite shower room and an en-suite toilet with hand basin.

The saloon and galley area are beautifully finished as well as being very practical. The forward cabin is a great example of clever design you can leave the two V- berths as single beds or pull one out to make a double with the other used as seating. The forward cabin shares the main heads via its own en-suite access. It’s also worth mentioning that this design, with the enclosed cockpit area, makes this boat also ideal for living aboard for extended periods.

Then moving on to performance there are two 485hp Cummings diesel engines capable of giving a top speed around 30 knots. Finally, the condition of this boat looks excellent throughout; she has clearly been very well looked after.
