Whether your boat is a Westerley, Bayliner, Jeanneau or Quicksilver, every boater needs a little rest and recuperation once in a while and Essex offers a number of inns providing waterside refreshment.

The Ferry Boat Inn at North Fambridge is a 500 year old riverside pub which offers food, drink and accommodation. Not far from Boatshed Essex HQ on the River Crouch, it is a freehouse offering beers such as Green King IPA, Ruddles County and Abbot.

For the yachtsman it provides “a safe, relaxing harbour after, perhaps an arduous sail from the Continent or along the coast. A full-sized bath and a comfortable bed.”

This weekend the Anchor Riverside at Hullbridge is offering a bonfire night and hog roast on Saturday night. This pub and restaurant has views of the water if you like watching the boats and water fowl go by. Book early if you’re going this Saturday.

If you’re more interested in boating on the inland waterways you may have discovered The Moorhen in Harlow. I am a big fan of narrowboating on the winding, twisting River Stort past old mills and wild flower meadows. This waterside pub is some distance from the centre of Harlow, offering instead a very family friendly venue with affordable food, and quiet towpath walks after you’ve eaten.

What is your favourite waterside pub? Do you travel by road or by boat?
